Now, the answer to whether birds abandon their young if humans disturb the nest is a little more complicated. For one, it depends on the bird itself. Hawks, for instance, might be more willing to abandon their young if they think a predator attack is imminent, while a robin might not see the same risk in a disturbed nest.   Nest sanitation may suffer (especially if female disappears), so consider a nest change if it gets bad. Lost Male: If a male is lost during egg laying, and the female does not find a new partner, she will often abandon the nest. However, do not rush to clean out the box until you are absolutely CERTAIN the nest is abandoned. (see cleaning.).

A few days later the cuckoo waits for the host female to leave the nest and then lays an egg in seconds, after removing one of the host’s eggs. Lays one egg to a nest but may lay eggs, each in a different nest. The host bird may accept it, throw it out, or abandon nest. The cuckoo egg may resemble host’s eggs in both color and size.   Once the female is finished laying a set of eggs, she settles into the nest and doesn’t leave until they hatch. It’s called “sitting tight.” The incubation period is 12 to 14 days.

The incubation period increases as the bird species becomes larger. Unlike mammals, which give birth to live young, all of a bird’s young development occurs within the egg. When the egg is first laid, it contains everything the young bird needs to develop. For the past month, I have been watching the Sandhill Cranes sitting on the nest.   Two bald eagle eggs won’t hatch this spring at a nest that sits feet up an oak tree at the D.C. Our three year old grandson found a nest in our backyard the day we gave him the book, and he and his five year old sister figured it out to be a robin's nest because of the mud on the bottom.
